Partition Compressor and Turbine

The Partition Compressor–Turbine (PCT) is a breakthrough technology in the field of gas compression and expansion, combining the functions of both a compressor and a turbine in a single device. The core innovation lies in a set of barriers rotating at variable speeds, made possible by the use of elliptical gears. This solution enables precise control of gas flow with minimal energy loss.

Depending on the direction of operation, the device can function as:

  • a high-efficiency compressor, storing energy in the form of compressed gas

  • or as an efficient turbine, recovering energy from expanding gas

Key Benefits of the Partition Compressor–Turbine

High energy efficiency – variable-speed barriers and minimal friction significantly reduce energy losses in both compression and expansion processes
Bidirectional operation – a single unit acts as both compressor and turbine, simplifying system architecture, lowering investment costs, and increasing reliability
Wide operating range – the system works efficiently across various load conditions and rotational speeds, making it ideal for use with intermittent energy sources like wind and solar
Compact and low-noise design – the absence of traditional piston or screw components results in a quiet and compact machine with a high standard of mechanical smoothness

Prototype and Development

The Partition Compressor–Turbine consists of:

  • a cylinder with two ports: one for low-pressure gas and one for high-pressure gas

  • a set of barriers rotating inside the cylinder

  • retaining rings that hold the barriers in place

  • elliptical gears that generate variable rotational speeds

🔄 In compressor mode, the barriers accelerate and move apart to draw in gas, then decelerate and move closer to compress it.
🔁 In turbine mode, the process is reversed – expanding gas moves the barriers and generates torque.

Work is currently underway on Prototype 1.

Applications of the Partition Compressor–Turbine

Energy storage systems – as the core module for compression and expansion of air or gas
Industrial installations – for efficient compression of process gases and recovery of energy from high-pressure systems
HVAC and cooling systems – effective pressure and flow regulation in large-scale air conditioning setups
Pneumatic industrial systems – utilizing compressed air as an energy carrier
Decentralized energy storage – e.g., for smart grids, microgrids, and off-grid energy infrastructure
