ROWING CYCLOROTOR
The Rowing Cyclorotor is an innovative technology for generating lift and/or propulsion, designed with the goal of achieving maximum aerodynamic efficiency by reducing viscous drag. Unlike conventional rotors that must operate at high rotational speeds to produce sufficient thrust, the Rowing Cyclorotor achieves comparable performance at lower speeds. This significantly reduces energy losses due to viscous resistance while improving the overall system efficiency.
Benefits of Using the Rowing Cyclorotor
✅ Reduced viscous drag – low-speed operation minimizes aerodynamic resistance while maintaining high thrust
✅ High efficiency – optimal blade orientation throughout the rotation cycle maximizes interaction with the surrounding medium
✅ Multi-environment capability – applicable in both air and water environments
✅ Simple mechanical movement – cyclic blade angle adjustment does not require complex control systems
✅ Scalability – adaptable for small drones, aquatic vehicles, and manned platforms
Prototype and System Development
The Rowing Cyclorotor consists of:
- a set of aerodynamic blades mounted on rotating booms
• a cyclic pitch adjustment mechanism synchronized with the rotation
• two key operational phases within each rotation cycle:
– when the blade moves in the direction of the lift vector, it is oriented (almost) perpendicular to that vector, maximizing force generation
– when the blade moves in the opposite direction, it is oriented (almost) perpendicular to the boom, minimizing aerodynamic drag
This kinematic behavior mimics a rowing motion—hence the system’s name. A demonstrator prototype is currently under development, along with aerodynamic and energy performance validation in model-scale conditions.
Applications of the Rowing Cyclorotor
✅ Drones and UAVs – efficient and quiet propulsion with extended flight duration
✅ eVTOL and VTOL aircraft – a low-energy alternative to traditional propellers
✅ Marine propulsion – eco-friendly and silent drive for surface and underwater vehicles
✅ Amphibious vehicles – capable of generating lift and propulsion in both air and water
✅ Biomimetic robotics – inspired by the movement of insects, fish, and birds in hybrid systems
