NO-TILT SAIL
NO-TILT SAIL is an innovative wind-assisted propulsion technology for ships that completely eliminates vessel heeling during wind operation. Thanks to a unique configuration—mounting the sail on the windward side, tilted forward and leeward—the aerodynamic force acts horizontally, pushing the ship forward without generating a heeling moment. The solution can be applied to vessels of any size and enables the safe and efficient use of wind energy to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
Benefits of Using NO-TILT SAIL
✅ Zero heel – enables safe cargo transport, especially for sensitive or fragile goods, regardless of wind strength or sailing conditions
✅ Lower fuel consumption – every square meter of sail surface translates into measurable savings and CO₂ reduction
✅ Higher energy efficiency – makes use of free and abundant wind energy to assist ship propulsion
✅ Regulatory compliance – supports maritime sector decarbonization and alignment with IMO environmental goals
✅ Scalability of sail size – no heel allows for larger sails than traditional systems, increasing power potential
✅ Improved vessel stability – wind force presses the ship into the water, functioning as a natural stabilizing ballast
Prototype and System Development
The NO-TILT SAIL system is composed of:
- a sail (S) stretched between points A (front lower corner), B (top corner), and C (rear corner)
- a mast (4) and boom (5), installed on the ship’s hull (H)
- a rigging system with sheets (6L/6R and 7L/7R) and anchoring points (8L/8R, 9L/9R, 10)
- a specially engineered geometry – the sail is mounted windward, tilted forward and leeward
This configuration ensures that the resultant wind force (F) acts along the ship’s centerline, eliminating any heeling moment. A demonstration-scale prototype is currently under development to validate the aerodynamic and stability performance of the technology.
Applications of NO-TILT SAIL
✅ Cargo and container vessels – reduced fuel costs without compromising cargo security
✅ Tankers, LNG carriers, and chemical ships – optimized efficiency on long-haul ocean routes
✅ Passenger ships and ferries – improved comfort and minimized lateral motion
✅ Specialized and military vessels – independent wind-assist system for increased range and autonomy
